Keeping at alive: the eco bags
Ramlal Khatri (Seen above and to the left) is a very talented artisan who has won prestigious national awards for his wood-block printing, a traditional art where hand-carved wood blocks are used to create patterns on fabric. He follows an environmentally-friendly process and uses 100% natural dyes. Wood-blocking has been practiced for generations, originally used to create bed sheets, for which they were given merit as artists. However, these were not very marketable products, and this artisan group began to struggle.
SETU-The Bridge To Artisans developed the idea of making functional products using this age-old technique as a way to preserve this traditional art. Thus, the Eco-shopper and Green Computing laptop bag were born. Our Eco-shopper bags are reusable, washable shopping bags, made from locally-grown and woven, unbleached cotton. These are then hand-blocked using natural mineral and vegetable dyes. They have become our number 1 best selling item, which has definitely impacted Ramlal and his group.
Soon after we added more products made by this group to our inventory. Fair Trade has helped Ramlal and his group reach a market, allowing them to live off of their art. This has kept the traditional wood-block printing knowledge alive. In addition, the group now has sustainable income, which they use to develop their community.
