Celebrating International Labour day at SETU

Awareness workshop addressing labour rights

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some places, is a celebration in the honour of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs every year on 1st of May.

SETU observed the occasion by organising an awareness workshop discussing the origins of the day and rights of the working class, amongst the under privileged women working as labourers. These women work as casual labour, are unaware about their rights and are prone to exploitation due to lack of education and awareness.

The session started with a general discussion on the topic. Light was thrown on the fact as to how and when the day came into being and its significance.

In the session, people were made aware about the labour laws and their rights as labourers.

Details were informed about the Indian labour law refer to laws regulating labour in India. Following standards were covered:
• Scope of protection
• Employment Contracts
• Wage Regulation
• Working time
• Health and Safety
• Pensions and Insurance
SETU team members conducted the session and made the audience aware about their rights and the importance of May day. It was an informative session as people were introduced to the concept of Labour Day & their rights! About 21 women participated in the workshop.
